PIKEVILLE COLLEGE: UPIKE Weber Art Gallery presents unique view through a microscope

Lab

Pikeville College issued the following announcement on Oct. 16

The University of Pikeville Weber Art Gallery will present their second exhibit of the fall semester beginning October 21. “Macroinvertebrates, Through the Lens,” photography by Misty Hamilton showcases her unique view through a microscope and digital camera of both common and rarely seen insects and finding beauty in unexpected places.

Hamilton has a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and a master’s degree in biology. Her career in environmental consulting has given her the opportunity to collect insect specimens in order to analyze stream health.

“I started out taking microscopic photographs of insects and other macroinvertebrates for identification purposes,” said Hamilton. “I soon found myself trying to get the perfect shot, one that was both educational and beautiful.”

Hamilton takes several different kinds of photos, including whole-organism photos and highly- magnified photos of particular parts or characteristics.

“I hope the exposure to these unusual views of insects will allow people to see their beauty,” said Hamilton. “The appreciation for the beauty of nature is not often seen with the naked eye.”

UPIKE Professor of Art Patricia Kowalok, and Associate Professor of Art Petra Carroll, are excited to host this event of the microscopic world that shows viewers a whole new realm full of minute beauty.

“As a biologist, Ms. Hamilton brings her scholarship of the natural world,” said Kowalok. “As an artist, she brings an appreciation of the amazing world in which we all live.”

There will be a reception on Friday, October 25, from 4-6 p.m. and the exhibit will continue through the end of the semester.  The community is cordially invited to the exhibit and reception.

The Weber Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Record Memorial Building on UPIKE’s campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 9-11 a.m. and 1-5 p.m.; and Friday 9-10 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

For more information, contact Kowalok at (606) 218-5758 or Carroll at (606) 218-5759.
