Young farmers are encountering a different path to success than previous generations, according to an April 29 announcement by Nutrien Ag Solutions. The company highlighted the evolving definition of achievement in farming, shaped by rising operational costs, tight margins, and changing expectations around work and family life.

The topic is important as younger growers must adapt to a rapidly changing industry where hard work alone no longer guarantees financial security or stability. Many now balance running their farms with seeking sustainable quality of life and flexible careers.

Logan Meeks, a territory manager at Nutrien Financial who has been involved in family farming operations, said: “Most younger growers now are facing tight or even potential negative margins while they’re still getting their footing. This generation isn’t the first to begin farming in trying times, but if you look at the increased costs of running a farming operation, in addition to these tight margins, younger growers are struggling to put equity on their balance sheets.”

Meeks explained that today’s farmers need more than just traditional skills; they must also embrace technology for data-driven decision-making. He said: “Come harvest, my granddad used his best judgement to estimate what harvest would equate to when he was running the harvester… Now, my generation, we have AI that can predict yields weeks before harvest. Today’s harvesters are more accurate than ever… My cousin and I can be 100 miles away and remote into our harvesters to watch in real-time as our dads are running the machines.” Hollie Rudy from Nutrien Financial recalled lifestyle changes over time: “Forty years ago… We lived a very different lifestyle than what my kids experienced growing up on the farm in the last decade.”

Nutrien Ag Solutions outlined four tips for young farmers: keep consistent records; prepare for economic cycles; plan ahead despite uncertainty; and seek support rather than working alone. Meeks noted: “It’s a different time in the ag industry… For me, I’m requesting yield data… because that’s the level of detail and accuracy I need.” The company emphasized adaptability and informed decision-making as keys for future resilience.

Nutrien Ag Solutions advances sustainable farming practices according to its official website. It serves as the retail division of Nutrien Ltd., operating across North America according to its official website. The company offers crop nutrients, crop protection products, seed and agronomic services to support farming needs.

Looking ahead, Nutrien Ag Solutions aims to assist growers through products and services promoting sustainable agriculture as reported by its official website. As Meeks concluded about adapting for long-term viability: “We have the ability to use hard data to drive decisions… And that new era of data management allows us to make better decisions than ever before.”
