The Western Kentucky University women’s golf team led the field after the first round of the Conference USA Championship on April 20 at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco, Texas. The Lady Toppers finished the day with an even-par score of 288, holding a four-stroke advantage as they head into the second round.

This early lead is significant for WKU as it sets a strong tone for their performance in the tournament. Senior Sydney Hackett was tied for first place individually with a two-under-par score of 70. Three other golfers shared this top spot alongside Hackett.

Freshman Leah Edwards finished just one stroke behind Hackett, carding a one-under-par 71 to secure fifth place after day one. Senior Averi Cline shot an even-par 72 and is tied for sixth, while freshman Reagan Ramage posted a three-over-par 75 to tie for twenty-first place. Junior Julia Zigrossi ended her round with an eight-over-par 80, tying her for forty-fifth position.

“I’m proud of how the team prepared and came up with a good game plan for today,” said head coach Adam Gary. “We have had a really tough schedule this spring and I think that’s helped prepare us for the conditions. There’s still a lot of golf left but it’s nice to get off to a good start.”

The second round of play is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, with WKU’s tee times beginning at 11:00 AM.
