Western Kentucky University softball lost the first game of its series against Delaware, 6-3, according to an April 30 report. The Hilltoppers recorded five hits compared to the Blue Hens’ three but were unable to turn those opportunities into a win.

The outcome affects both teams’ standings in Conference USA, with WKU now holding a record of 36-11 overall and 18-7 in conference play. Delaware improved its record to 29-21 overall and 16-9 in the conference.

Delaware started strong with three runs in the first inning through a two-run single and a bases-loaded walk. Anna Mauck put WKU on the scoreboard with a squeeze bunt in the fifth inning. Despite additional runs by Delaware in later innings, WKU narrowed the gap late in the game when Mauck delivered her second RBI single, followed by Katie Murphy’s RBI hit. However, these efforts were not enough as WKU fell short by three runs.

Mauck led her team with two RBIs and was also noted as the only Hilltopper with more than one hit during this matchup. Pitcher Erica Houge contributed four strikeouts over five innings of work for WKU.

The Hilltoppers will continue their three-game series against Delaware on Friday, May 1, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. Central Time and broadcast available on ESPN+.
