Northern Kentucky freshman Sydney Zakic was named to the Horizon League All-League Second Team, according to an April 23 announcement from the league.

Zakic’s recognition comes after her first season with the Norse women’s tennis team, where she played in the top three singles slots and finished with four singles wins. She achieved a 2-2 record at second singles, including victories over IU Indy and Oakland in Horizon League play. In doubles competition, Zakic posted a 4-9 overall record, earning three wins alongside Alyssa Cameron and one with Catharina Cardoso. In Northern Kentucky’s season finale against Milwaukee, Zakic and Cameron secured the doubles point for their team by winning a tiebreak match.

Norse head coach Brian Nester said, “It’s wonderful to see Sydney recognized as an All-League. She improved all year long.”

The Horizon League also announced other award winners for the season: Nel Van Hout of Milwaukee was named Player of the Year; Oliwia Klimas of Oakland received Freshman of the Year; Honoka Yamashita (Milwaukee) and Lydia Foster (Youngstown State) earned Herb Foster Sportsmanship Awards; while Coach of the Year honors went to Brian Nester (Northern Kentucky) and Dave Brown (Oakland). The full list includes First Team selections such as Ella Franz (Cleveland State), Kally Kadzinski (IU Indy), Nel Van Hout (Milwaukee), Nadiia Konieva (Milwaukee), Oliwia Klimas (Oakland), and Hanna Telzynska (Youngstown State).

Zakic and her teammates are set to compete in the Horizon League Tennis Championships beginning Friday when Northern Kentucky faces Youngstown State.
