NFIB State Director Tom Underwood has expressed that small business owners are paying close attention to a new bill that could alter the way they pay local taxes. The legislation, introduced by Rep. Jared Bauman from the 28th District and Rep. Rachel Roarx from the 38th District, proposes the creation of a single online platform for businesses to manage tax payments across multiple cities and counties.
Underwood highlighted the current challenges faced by small business owners: “Right now, if you’re a small business owner with operations in two towns in neighboring counties, you or your accountant must file separate tax returns in each municipality and county. Some businesses are filing dozens of these forms." He noted that House Bill 253 aims to simplify this process by establishing one website covering all local jurisdictions.
However, Underwood cautioned about potential drawbacks: “Of course, the devil’s in the details, and our small business members want to make sure this wouldn’t lead to higher tax rates to cover the cost of the program or create a new state bureaucracy that controls the local funds."
The NFIB is committed to monitoring this legislation closely. Underwood affirmed their dedication to advocating for reduced and simplified tax burdens on Kentucky's job creators so they can reinvest more into their businesses.
