Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) vowed to support Senate candidates based on electability and credibility ahead of the 2022 race.
“My goal is, in every way possible, to have nominees representing the Republican Party who can win in November,” McConnell told Politico, The Epoch Times reported. “Some of them may be people the former president likes. Some of them may not be. The only thing I care about is electability.
“I do think electability—not who supports who—is the critical point.”
Though McConnell is a well known Trump critic, he did not vote to convict him on Saturday. He said that his main focus was on 2022 and winning places like Wyoming. McConnell may have been referring to Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, who was recently censured for voting to impeach Trump.
“I think Sen. McConnell’s speech, he got a load off his chest, obviously, but unfortunately he put a load on the back of Republicans,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on “Fox News Sunday,” The Epoch Times reported. “That speech you will see in 2022 campaigns.”
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), said for now they will focus on President Joe Biden’s agenda. Trump has yet to announce any plans, nor endorse 2022 candidates. Several GOP representatives have announced their retirement ahead of the elections.
