Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie repeatedly announced on Twitter that he would object to the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
“Looking forward to the drive to DC tomorrow morning. Voting No when I get there.”
In his second Tweet, he expressed that the impeachment would only result in further discord.
"I will vote Nay on Impeachment today," Massie wrote on Twitter, Wednesday. "I think pursuing impeachment will unnecessarily increase political division in our country and serves no real purpose."
Massie was also among the seven Republicans who released a joint statement announcing that they wouldn’t be objecting to the electoral votes that were counted on Jan. 6
"The text of the Constitution is clear. States select electors. Congress does not. Accordingly, our path forward is also clear. We must respect the states' authority here," the statement said. "Though doing so may frustrate our immediate political objectives, we have sworn an oath to promote the Constitution above our policy goals."
The tally of the Electoral College votes was halted during a massive violent attack on the Capitol. Massie and other Kentucky Congress members declared themselves safe later in the afternoon.
The impeachment resolution was completed afterward.
If Trump is impeached he may be ineligible to run in 2024 if Congress decides to disqualify him, according to an article from WUSA 9, which cited the Constitution.
