U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has released a statement on Thursday with regard to the Capitol riot that happened on Jan. 6.

He is calling for an investigation and comprehensive review of the Capitol’s security measures.

McConnel commenced his statement by recognizing the efforts of the U.S. Capitol Police Officers who valiantly defended the Capitol during the protest.

The Senate Majority Leader also mentioned that Congress is also grateful to the local authorities from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, and to everyone who extended their assistance to the officers in restraining the rioters, and helped clear and secure the Capitol.

While he is pleased with the bravery of the officers, he pointed out that the incident implied that there should be an enhancement on the Capitol’s security protocols.

“With that said, yesterday represented a massive failure of institutions, protocols, and planning that are supposed to protect the first branch of our federal government,” McConnel wrote in his statement. “A painstaking investigation and thorough review must now take place and significant changes must follow. Initial bipartisan discussions have already begun among committees of oversight and Congressional Leadership.”

McConnel labeled the Jan. 6 D.C. protest a failed insurrection.
