Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said yesterday’s events were the fault of unhinged criminals who incited violence.
“The ultimate blame for yesterday’s events lies with the unhinged criminals who tried to disrupt our government and with those who incited them,” McConnell tweeted. “But this fact does not preclude our addressing the shocking failures in the Capitol’s security posture and protocols.”
McConnell said he applauded the efforts of front-line police officers who helped.
“I salute and applaud those front-line U.S. Capitol Police officers who stood bravely in harm’s way during yesterday’s failed insurrection,” McConnell said in his statement. “We are praying today for those who sustained injuries, some serious, in the line of duty.”
McConnell said Congress was grateful for the efforts of the officers in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland, as well as federal law enforcement and the National Guard.
“With that said, yesterday represented a massive failure of institutions, protocols and planning that are supposed to protect the first branch of our federal government,” McConnell said in the statement.
McConnell said that Congress now needed to look at what it needed to do in the future.
“A painstaking investigation and thorough review must now take place and significant changes must follow,” McConnell said in the statement. Initial bipartisan discussions have already begun among committees of oversight and Congressional Leadership.”
Some of McConnell’s Twitter followers echoed his sentiments, while others disagreed on what started yesterday’s violence.
“I would contend that the failure of Judicial and legislative branches to do their jobs regarding a fraudulent election was the catalyst,” one user tweeted. “You point your finger you have 3 pointing back at you.”
Another user said the stealing of the election was to blame.
“The people can’t speak up, election fraud is not investigated, and the entire state agency does not act,” the user said.
