Northern Kentucky University Norse softball earned a close 2-1 victory over Morehead State on Apr. 22 at Frank Ignatius Grein Field in Highland Heights, Ky.

The win comes after the Norse had lost three consecutive home games to non-conference opponents. The team improved its record to 17-23 overall and 4-7 in the Horizon League, while Morehead State dropped to 7-32 overall and 6-15 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Freshman pitcher Abigail Byrd led Northern Kentucky by allowing only one unearned run in the first inning before shutting out the Eagles for the remainder of the game. Byrd completed all seven innings, giving up five hits and striking out two batters without issuing a walk. She threw just 83 pitches during her complete game performance.

Offensively, Northern Kentucky recorded five hits across 23 at-bats and drew four walks. The team was aggressive on base paths with six stolen bases during the game. Brielle DiMemmo contributed by going one-for-two with a run scored, a walk, and two stolen bases. Brooke Keltner also went one-for-two with an RBI and a walk, while Mack Brow walked once, stole two bases, and scored a run.

Looking ahead, Northern Kentucky will host Detroit Mercy this Friday and Saturday for its final home Horizon League series of the season.
