Northern Kentucky University Norse men’s volleyball team concluded its inaugural season on April 18 with a loss to Ball State in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) quarterfinal. The eighth-seeded Norse faced the top-ranked Cardinals at Worthen Arena, falling in three sets and ending their first-ever postseason run.
The match marked an important milestone for Northern Kentucky, as it was the program’s debut in postseason play. The team finished the season with a record of 5-19 overall and 2-14 in conference matches, while Ball State improved to 23-4 overall and 13-3 in MIVA play.
Despite the loss, Northern Kentucky showed strong efforts during the match. The team achieved a .316 hitting percentage but allowed Ball State to hit .552, with only five attack errors by the Cardinals. In the second set, NKU recorded 20 kills and narrowly lost with a score of 24-26—the closest set of the night.
Individual performances included Juanmarco Diaz leading all Norse players with 11 kills and two blocks. Adam Blair contributed seven kills against one error on ten attempts along with a block. Ryan Peterson had six successful attacks out of seven tries plus a block, while Griffin Wheatley added five kills and two aces. Nick Whitley recorded twenty assists for NKU.
The conclusion of this first season represents an important step for Northern Kentucky University’s men’s volleyball program as it looks ahead to future seasons.
