Northern Kentucky University Norse baseball lost its series opener against Youngstown State on May 1, giving up ten runs over the sixth and seventh innings and ultimately falling 11-6.
The game began with Northern Kentucky taking an early lead. The Norse scored three runs in the first inning, including a pair on a single by Jackson Wang. A sacrifice fly from Josh Williams extended their advantage to 4-1 in the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Logan Wilson delivered a strong performance through 4.2 innings, striking out nine batters—a season-high for any Norse pitcher—and allowing just one earned run before leaving the game.
Youngstown State mounted a comeback in the fourth inning after loading the bases with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Despite two flyouts that nearly ended the threat, Youngstown rallied for seven runs on three hits to close out the inning. The Penguins added three more runs in the seventh while Northern Kentucky managed only single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Jackson Wang stood out offensively for Northern Kentucky, going four-for-four at bat with a double, three RBI, one run scored, and a walk from his spot lower in the batting order. Pierce Bauerle contributed by scoring twice and drawing three walks while Ethan Thomas collected two hits including a double.
After this loss, Northern Kentucky’s record stands at 20-24 overall (9-10 Horizon League), while Youngstown State improves to 10-34 (7-9 HL). The teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday for another matchup.
