Murray State University President Dr. Ron K. Patterson and First Lady Jenny Patterson awarded scholarships to three Department of Art & Design students during the Organization of Murray State Art Students’ annual exhibition in the Clara M. Eagle Gallery, according to an April 17 announcement. The couple also selected several student artworks for display at their residence, Oakhurst, in a new student exhibition opening April 8 and continuing through the summer.

The initiative aims to highlight student creativity while supporting emerging artists with both recognition and financial awards. It also marks the inaugural display of student work at Oakhurst, which is one of Murray State’s most iconic campus buildings.

Lisa Greene, a senior studio art major from Cadiz, Kentucky, received the $1,000 Oakhurst Presidential Award for Artistic Excellence for her piece “Beautifully Shattered.” Emily Ray, a senior studio art major from Stonefort, Illinois, was given the $600 Oakhurst Award for Artistic Distinction for “The Great Blue Heron.” Lily Insco, a sophomore art education major from Mayfield, Kentucky, earned the $400 Oakhurst Award for Artistic Merit with her work “Precedence.”

“Jenny and I are delighted by the opportunity to showcase artwork by Murray State students in our home,” said President Patterson. “Our students’ creativity and talent are a constant source of inspiration, and it is a privilege to celebrate their work in this way. We look forward to sharing their remarkable pieces with guests and highlighting the strength of our arts programs at Murray State.”

Greene said: “I am profoundly honored and deeply grateful for this incredible opportunity. It fills my heart with immense joy to have my work recognized not only by the esteemed President of our University but also by the First Lady… This acknowledgment is a source of genuine humility for me…” Insco added: “This recognition motivates me to keep growing as an artist and future educator… I am so grateful to have a university president and first lady who truly value the arts.” Ray described receiving her award as “surreal…in the most positive way,” expressing gratitude toward President Patterson.

President Patterson established the gallery at Oakhurst in fall 2025 following its history as both his family’s primary residence on campus since construction began under Dr. Rainey T. Wells in 1917.

Dr. Rebecca Williams said: “The Department of Art & Design values President Patterson’s vision…and his generosity in providing a scholarship… What began as intention to fund one scholarship grew into support for three students after he and First Lady Jenny Patterson spent time with students’ work.”
