Murray State Baseball will host Illinois State for a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series at Johnny Reagan Field starting April 17. The Racers, currently holding a record of 21-16 overall and 7-5 in conference play, aim to break a four-game losing streak and improve their standing as they enter the second half of the MVC schedule.
This matchup is significant for both teams as Murray State seeks to regain momentum after recent struggles. The Racers have faced challenges both offensively and defensively over the past two weeks, posting a .239 team batting average and an 8.05 earned run average while allowing opponents to hit .316 during that stretch. Despite leading the MVC in runs batted in earlier this season, their offense has cooled recently.
Head coach Dan Skirka is approaching a milestone, needing just two more victories to move into third place on Murray State’s all-time wins list with 232 career wins, surpassing Mike Thieke’s mark of 231. Skirka holds a favorable record against Illinois State with nine wins and five losses overall, including five wins at home.
Illinois State enters the series with a record of 22-14 overall and an even 6-6 in conference play. After sweeping Belmont in their opening Valley series, the Redbirds have dropped three consecutive conference matchups but continue to lead the MVC with a .297 team batting average. Their offense is highlighted by redshirt junior Brayden Bakes, who ranks among the top three hitters in both batting average (.371) and home runs (10) within the league.
The Racers’ pitching rotation features Nic Schutte starting Friday’s game and Jacob Hustedde on Saturday; Sunday’s starter remains undecided. Fans attending Friday’s opener can also enjoy a Racer Drone Show presented by CFSB following the game.
