Head coach Clay Dixon announced on May 1 that the Morehead State University track and field team will send nearly its entire roster to compete at the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky. The two-day event at the UK Track and Field Complex marks the sixth consecutive season, and tenth time in fourteen years, that Morehead State has participated at this venue.
The meet serves as the final competition for the full team before they head into the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in less than two weeks. Dixon said, “Let’s go one more time before OVC and see what we can do. Some have tapered a little to give it a final strong effort. It will be cooler than we are used to but that just keeps us on our toes and ready for anything.”
Dixon has entered 24 men and 19 women athletes across 18 events with a total of 66 entries, making it one of the largest groups he has sent during his tenure. Every healthy athlete is expected to participate over Friday and Saturday’s schedule, which begins with field events at noon on Friday.
The Jim Green Invitational will feature competitors from 23 teams including Asbury (Ky.), Bellarmine, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky State, Louisville, Marshall, Pikeville (Ky.), Union (Ky.), Tennessee and West Virginia State. The meet is not expected to be scored; all events except for the men’s and women’s hurdles will be finals.
Recent performances by Morehead State athletes include school records set last weekend in Louisville by Kalynn Pease in both long jump and sprint relays. Pease currently ranks seventh nationally after her record leap of 21’05.25″ won her flight last week.
Following this weekend’s competition, Morehead State’s track athletes will take a break for exams before competing again at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships scheduled from May 14-16.
