The Morehead State softball team will play its last non-conference game of the season against Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, April 22, at Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field in Highland Heights. The game is a make-up for a previously scheduled doubleheader from March 11 and will begin at 4 p.m.
This matchup marks just the fourth midweek non-conference outing for Morehead State this season. The Eagles recently secured a 1-0 shutout win over UT Martin, their first road shutout in two years. Head coach Megan Griffith said, “We’re looking to carry momentum from Monday’s win into the midweek contest. We’ll need to control the small ball and run game at NKU while keeping their hitters off balance. We will rely on our full staff and defense for that. For our offense, we’re going to continue building our execution and sticking to our approach at the plate.”
Morehead State has improved after starting the year with only two wins in its first 26 games, now having won five of its last sixteen contests. Key players include pitcher Ainsley Stubbs with five wins in her last ten appearances and outfielder Maddy Christopher who is currently on a nine-game hitting streak and has reached base in all but one contest this season.
Christopher is also approaching several school records; she holds a .391 batting average which ranks fifth all-time for single-season performance at MSU and matches the best career average of .365. Teammate Pickford is moving up career lists as well, challenging rankings for doubles, extra-base hits, and slugging percentage.
The Eagles’ team statistics show improvement as well: they are batting .269 with an average of just over four runs per game—marks that compare favorably with recent seasons—and have matched school records by hitting only four batters this spring.
Northern Kentucky enters Wednesday’s matchup with a home record of six wins and nine losses this spring but has lost its last three home games. The Norse have played several common opponents with Morehead State throughout the season.
Looking ahead, Morehead State will return home after Wednesday’s contest to host Southeast Missouri in its final home stand before closing out regular season play against Lindenwood.
