The Morehead State softball team lost a close game to Northern Kentucky on April 22, with the Norse winning 2-1 at Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field. The contest was marked by strong pitching from both teams and lasted just one hour and 31 minutes.
This result is significant as it continues a challenging season for Morehead State, which now holds a record of 7-32. The team has struggled on the road, falling to 5-25 away from home this year.
Northern Kentucky’s Abigail Byrd pitched the entire game without allowing an earned run or walk, helping her team secure the win and improve her personal record to 5-5. “It was a tight game, and we fought until the end,” said Morehead State head coach Megan Griffith. “Defense played well. We had a few walks get away from us early in the game. Hitters had a hard time making adjustments.”
All runs were scored in the first inning. For Morehead State, Jordan Donato was hit by a pitch before Sela Pickford singled and Noemye Letendre reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Sophie Collins then drove in Donato with a fielder’s choice for their only run of the day.
Northern Kentucky responded in its half of the inning with two hits, two walks, and three stolen bases that led to runs by Mack Brow and Brielle DiMemmo. After that inning, both teams’ pitchers limited further scoring opportunities despite several runners reaching scoring position.
Morehead State used four pitchers during the game: Ainsley Stubbs started but took the loss after allowing two runs over two innings; Allicen Harris threw two innings with one hit allowed; Emma Solis pitched one inning; Rylie Burney finished with another scoreless frame.
Both teams ended up with five hits each and left eight runners stranded on base. Maddy Christopher extended her hitting streak to ten games while leading Morehead State alongside Collins at bat.
Looking ahead, Morehead State will finish its home schedule against Southeast Missouri this weekend before closing out regular season play at Lindenwood.
