U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell released a statement on Mar. 9 regarding the death of Army Sergeant Benjamin N. Pennington, a native of Glendale, Kentucky, who died from injuries sustained in an Iranian attack on U.S. troops stationed in Saudi Arabia.
The loss of Sgt. Pennington is significant for both Kentucky and the nation, as it highlights the ongoing risks faced by American servicemembers deployed abroad.
“Today, Kentucky mourns the loss of one of our own: Sergeant Benjamin N. Pennington, U.S. Army., a native of Glendale. Sgt. Pennington was killed by Iran in an attack on U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia. Sgt. Pennington’s death is an awful reminder of the costs of Tehran’s decades-long war against American servicemembers. A grateful nation honors his life and his service to our country as he paid the ultimate sacrifice in defending American freedom. Elaine and I are thinking of his family during this difficult time, and we pray for our troops still in harm’s way in the Middle East,” McConnell said.
McConnell has been recognized for his contributions to U.S. Senate history and global leadership, according to the official website. He has also been named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME Magazine on three occasions, according to the official website.
