U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) delivered remarks on Mar. 12 honoring Staff Sergeant Benjamin N. Pennington, who was killed during the ongoing war with Iran, and discussed the broader implications of U.S. engagement in the conflict.

The death of Sergeant Pennington marks the seventh American casualty in the conflict with Iran, highlighting the human cost of military operations abroad. McConnell said, “Staff Sergeant Benjamin N. Pennington, U.S. Army, was a native of Glendale, Kentucky, not far from Fort Knox. He was deployed with the 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. And an Iranian strike mortally wounded him in the line of duty.” He extended his sympathies to Pennington’s family and community: “I’m confident that, today, Glendale and the rest of Hardin County are surrounding Sergeant Pennington’s parents, Timothy and Carrie, with support.”

McConnell addressed concerns about America’s strategic priorities and alliances amid ongoing hostilities with Iran. He said that adversaries such as China and Russia have interests aligned with Iran: “The PRC is not a neutral observer in the Middle East… Beijing has an interest in the steady flow of cheap Iranian oil – to the tune of 1.4 million barrels last year.” He also noted Russia’s involvement: “Moscow and Tehran, together, propped up the brutal Assad regime in Syria… Russia’s war of conquest in Ukraine would look quite different without a steady supply of Iranian attack drones.”

He criticized those who downplay reports about Russian intelligence sharing with Iran: “The President’s all-purpose emissary, Steve Witkoff, has downplayed these reports and relayed Russia’s strenuous denial… But unlike Mr. Witkoff, I am not at all inclined to… ‘take the Russians at their word.'” McConnell urged for greater seriousness regarding threats posed by these alliances.

McConnell highlighted Ukraine’s support for U.S.-led actions against Iran and its expertise in drone warfare: “Right now, teams of Ukraine’s top experts in drone warfare are on the ground in the Gulf… helping America’s allies defend against Iranian drone attacks.” He called for increased cooperation and investment in defense technologies developed by partners like Ukraine.

As Kentucky’s longest-serving senator and former Senate Majority Leader according to his official website, McConnell has championed an internationalist foreign policy focused on strong national defense and strategic alliances according to his official website. He has been recognized for his contributions to Senate history and global leadership according to his official website.

In closing his remarks on U.S. security interests abroad McConnell said: “America is stronger and more secure when we stand with our friends and stand up to our enemies. This is not murky or ambiguous. It’s an opportunity for moral clarity and strategic wisdom.”
