The University of Louisville softball team defeated Syracuse 5-1 on April 25, marking its first 40-win season since 2013.
The achievement is significant for the No. 25-ranked Cardinals, who now hold a record of 40-10 overall and 15-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The game was played at Ulmer Stadium.
Pitcher Madi Reeves earned her second complete game of the season, allowing six hits and one unearned run while recording a season-high six strikeouts. Madison Pickens and Ava Venturelli each contributed two runs batted in. Pickens, Easton Lotus, Bri Despines, and Addy O’Dell all recorded stolen bases during the game.
Louisville took an early lead after Chelsea Mack and Lotus opened with singles in the first inning. A sacrifice fly from Lookadoo brought Mack home for the first run, followed by an RBI single from Pickens that scored Lotus. Both teams’ pitchers limited offense through five innings until Syracuse managed to score its only run in the sixth inning.
In response, Louisville added three more runs in their half of the sixth inning with contributions from Despines, Lookadoo, Pickens, and Venturelli. The series will conclude tomorrow at noon when Louisville faces Syracuse again; Senior Day festivities are scheduled before the game and it will be streamed on ACCNX.
The Cardinals’ milestone reflects their consistent performance throughout this season as they prepare for postseason play.
