The University of Louisville baseball team will face Vanderbilt in Nashville on May 4 in the annual Battle of the Barrel. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. Eastern Time and will be broadcast on ESPN2, with radio coverage available on 93.9 The Ville.
This matchup holds significance as Louisville returns to the site where its journey to last year’s College World Series began. The Cardinals secured wins over East Tennessee State, top-seeded Vanderbilt, and Wright State during the NCAA Nashville Regional held at this location.
The Battle of the Barrel series between Louisville and Vanderbilt started in 2012 and has been played every year except for 2020. Tuesday’s contest marks the fourteenth meeting, with Louisville currently leading the series seven games to six. Overall, Louisville has a record of fourteen wins and twenty-nine losses against Vanderbilt but won both meetings in 2025.
Several players have contributed notable performances this season. Tague Davis set a new single-season home run record for Louisville with thirty homers through forty-eight games and leads nationally in home runs and runs batted in (RBIs). Lucas Moore leads the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) with thirty-two stolen bases this season and ranks tenth nationally; his career total stands at one hundred two stolen bases, second all-time for Louisville. Jimmy Nugent has hit seven home runs over his last ten games after transferring from Lincoln Trail College, while Zion Rose leads the team with a .416 batting average despite missing time due to injury.
On defense, Louisville’s pitchers and catchers have limited opponents’ base stealing success; opposing teams are just twenty-seven-for-fifty-four stealing against them this season. Their fifty percent caught-stealing rate is second-best nationally, while their seventeen pickoffs also rank among national leaders.
