The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced on Apr. 17 that West 9th Street in Covington will be closed between Crescent Avenue and Willow Run Road starting Friday, May 1, to support the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project. The closure is expected to last until the project’s substantial completion in 2033.
This long-term traffic change is part of a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving safety and reducing congestion along an eight-mile stretch of Interstate 71/75 in Kentucky and Interstate 75 in Ohio. The project includes constructing a new companion bridge, upgrading the existing Brent Spence Bridge for local traffic, redesigning ramp configurations, and adding pedestrian and bicycle connections linking neighborhoods to jobs and transit.
During the closure, vehicle traffic will be detoured via West Pike Street under I-71/I-75. North-to-south travelers should use Philadelphia Street, while those heading east on Pike Street may take Main Street back to Ninth. Pedestrians walking from Goebel Park are advised to follow a designated route using Philadelphia Street, West Pike Street, Lewis Street, Western Avenue, and reconnect with West Ninth.
Covington serves as a key Northern Kentucky location adjacent to Cincinnati across the Ohio River according to the official website. The city maintains an extensive parks system and features historic homes alongside repurposed commercial spaces according to the official website. Covington also fosters a diverse population that combines an Old World work ethic with creative talent while enhancing community recreation through its parks according to the official website.
The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project represents what officials describe as a once-in-a-generation investment intended to strengthen national freight movement, support local businesses and workforce growth, and enhance quality of life for millions who rely on this corridor.
