WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following recent damage caused by severe storms, Kentucky’s federal delegation sent a joint letter to President Biden, urging his approval of Governor Andy Beshear’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration, which would release federal funding to assist with critical clean-up and repairs. The letter was signed by Senators Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell, as well as Representatives James Comer (KY-01), Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Morgan McGarvey (KY-03), Thomas Massie (KY-04), Hal Rogers (KY-05) and Andy Barr (KY-06), showing bipartisan support on behalf of the Commonwealth’s storm recovery needs.
“As you know, Kentucky has experienced multiple disasters over the past several years resulting in more than $1 billion in damages. The significant flooding from the recent severe storms impacted areas still recovering from the catastrophic tornadoes on December 10, 2021, and other severe weather events,” the Members wrote in the letter.
“These counties and other areas of Western Kentucky experienced widespread flooding, record-breaking rainfall, and an Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale 1 tornado,” the Members continued. “We respectfully urge you to give prompt consideration to Governor Beshear’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration.”
Governor Beshear’s request was submitted on August 18th and includes FEMA Individual Assistance for 5 counties, including: Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Graves, and Green counties.
