As Halloween nears, Team Kentucky is urging residents to ensure safe transportation if their celebrations involve alcohol. Governor Andy Beshear emphasized the importance of making responsible decisions to protect oneself and others on the road. “Please plan ahead, make sure you have a safe way to get home and do not get behind the wheel after drinking,” he said.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) reported 3,486 highway crashes involving impaired drivers in the state last year, resulting in 1,683 injuries and 113 fatalities. During the week around Halloween alone, there were 84 alcohol-related collisions leading to two deaths and 43 injuries.

State officials are collaborating with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind both drivers and pedestrians about the dangers of being under the influence. NHTSA notes that about one-third of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. involve drunk drivers.

KYTC Secretary Jim Gray warned that even one drink can impair judgment and reaction time. He stressed vigilance during trick-or-treating activities to ensure safety for everyone involved.

To promote safe celebrations, authorities recommend designating a sober driver or using public transport or ride-sharing services even after consuming just one alcoholic beverage. Walking while impaired poses similar risks as driving; therefore, having a sober friend accompany you is advised.

If encountering a drunk driver, individuals should contact law enforcement via the Kentucky State Police toll-free line at 1-800-222-5555 or through their app’s one-touch dial feature. Callers will remain anonymous but should provide details like vehicle description and travel direction if possible.

Additionally, friends should intervene if someone attempts to drive after drinking by taking away their keys and arranging alternative transportation. Wearing seat belts remains crucial as it offers protection against impaired drivers.
