On Feb. 2, 2026, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reminded residents to plan for a safe ride home if their Super Bowl Sunday celebrations include alcohol.
The announcement comes as part of an effort to prevent impaired driving incidents during one of the year’s most popular social events. Officials say that arranging transportation in advance can help avoid tragedies on the road.
Governor Andy Beshear said, “We all share the responsibility to keep our roads safe however you choose to celebrate (…) If your Sunday plans involve drinking, please plan ahead and arrange a safe ride home.” The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety is working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk” campaign, which encourages football fans to ensure everyone gets home safely by driving sober.
Transportation Secretary Jim Gray said, “The choice to drive sober is a choice to save lives (…) Together, we can eliminate impaired driving crashes and prevent deaths by planning ahead, because everyone getting home safely is something we can all celebrate – no matter who wins the game.” According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, preliminary numbers indicate that 90 people in Kentucky were killed in crashes involving a drunk driver in 2025.
The Cabinet recommends several steps: planning a way home before festivities begin; using ride-share services, taxis, or public transportation if impaired; contacting law enforcement if an impaired driver is seen; taking keys from those about to drive while impaired; and always wearing a seat belt as it remains the best defense against injury or death in a crash.
