Kentucky lost a close game to No. 24 Tennessee, 10-9, at Kentucky Proud Park on May 3. The Wildcats nearly staged a comeback in the ninth inning but could not secure the win.
The outcome matters for Kentucky as it reflects their resilience and performance in Southeastern Conference play. Despite trailing by six runs entering the final three innings, Kentucky managed to cut the deficit to one before falling short.
Tyler Bell and Braxton Van Cleave hit home runs in the ninth inning, narrowing Tennessee’s lead to just one run. A runner reached first base with one out, but was unable to advance further. The Wildcats finished the weekend series having outscored Tennessee 30-14 and received strong pitching performances from starters Ben Cleaver and Jaxon Jelkin over a combined fifteen innings.
Coach Nick Mingione is now in his tenth season leading Kentucky baseball with a career record of 322-208. He remains the second-winningest coach in school history and has a record of 124-137 in conference games. Mingione said he is now 13-14 against Tennessee teams during his tenure.
Several players had notable performances during Sunday’s game and throughout the series. Luke Lawrence went one-for-five with an RBI, reaching safely in forty-seven of his last forty-eight games; Tyler Bell went three-for-four with three runs scored; Ethan Hindle contributed two hits; Caeden Cloud had an RBI double; Braxton Van Cleave achieved a career-high three hits including multiple hits across all three games this series; Jayce Tharnish extended his streaks for both hitting safely (nineteen of twenty-one games) and reaching base (twenty-three consecutive games).
