Gov. Andy Beshear provided an update on Kentucky’s response to a severe winter storm, reporting at least 10 storm-related deaths and urging residents to remain cautious as cold temperatures persist. “We are still experiencing dangerously cold temperatures and windchills, which will continue through the week,” said Gov. Beshear. He advised residents to stay indoors and limit outdoor exposure due to risks of frostbite and hypothermia.

State highway crews have cleared most interstates, covering 741,000 miles since Friday. The administration has submitted paperwork for joint damage assessments with FEMA, believing the storm meets assistance requirements.

As of 2 p.m. EST, there were 12,610 power outages, down from a peak of 73,590. Utility crews from neighboring states are working around the clock to restore power. Over 885 people used warming centers Tuesday night; Kentucky has set up 117 centers statewide.

The Governor reported fatalities in several counties and announced support from the Team Kentucky Emergency Relief Fund for funeral costs: “If we can be there for these families, we want to be,” he said.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is working on clearing roads but warns of slick spots due to refreezing. Motorists should drive cautiously and carry emergency kits. The Western Kentucky Parkway faced blockages due to a crash involving a commercial truck.

Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) responded to over 900 calls and more than 300 resource requests for essentials like generators and drinking water. The Kentucky National Guard assists with debris removal and wellness checks.

A state of emergency declaration was issued Friday, activating resources and implementing price gouging laws. President Trump approved an emergency disaster declaration providing federal aid for state response efforts.

Safety tips include taking breaks while shoveling snow and proper generator use. For non-life-threatening needs, residents can complete the Rapid Needs Assessment Form or call KYEM’s hotline.
