Kentucky residents are being urged to obtain a REAL ID ahead of the holiday travel season. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has made improvements to reduce wait times at Driver Licensing Regional Offices, making it easier for residents to upgrade or renew their licenses. Governor Andy Beshear noted that these changes aim to enhance customer experience and reduce wait times.
REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, requiring travelers flying domestically or visiting military bases to present a REAL ID-compliant credential. Since then, KYTC has issued over 1.1 million state credentials, including more than 21,000 permits for 15-year-olds.
Average wait times have decreased significantly from April through October 2025. Walk-in customer wait times fell from 49 minutes to 14 minutes, while appointment wait times dropped from 25 minutes to 11 minutes. This improvement is attributed to hiring approximately 125 additional full-time contracted staff and implementing a new line management system.
KYTC Secretary Jim Gray advised residents not to delay obtaining their REAL ID and emphasized the importance of arriving prepared with the necessary documentation. Residents can visit realidky.com for information on required documents and drive.ky.gov for renewal options.
The federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that starting February 1, 2026, passengers without an acceptable form of ID can pay a $45 fee for TSA Confirm.ID at security checkpoints. However, this option does not replace the need for a REAL ID and is valid only for a limited period.
