The Western Kentucky University men’s golf team advanced to third place at the Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, Arkansas on April 28. The Hilltoppers recorded an 8-under-par score of 280 for the day, bringing their total to 9-under (567) for the tournament.

This performance puts WKU two strokes ahead of Middle Tennessee, which is in fourth place, and eleven strokes behind New Mexico State in second as they head into the final round of stroke play on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s round was notable for being the lowest team score posted by WKU this season. Gage Doyle climbed nine spots on the leaderboard with a three-under-par 69, tying his season best and putting him in a tie for fourteenth place overall at two under par. Joseph Agee also achieved a season-best with a four-under-par 68 and is now tied for nineteenth place at one under par. Rafe Blankenship and Trevor Drew are also tied for nineteenth after two rounds; Drew shot a one-under-par 71 while Blankenship carded a three-over-par 75. Will Easterlin finished even par with a round of 72 and is tied for thirty-third overall.

“Today was a good day,” said head coach Austin King. “I was really proud of how the group competed all day, especially on the last few holes after it got away from them for a few there on 14 and 15. The job is not finished, but tomorrow is going to be a really exciting day to make match play and I’m pumped for the guys to go do it tomorrow!”

The third round will determine if WKU secures one of the top four spots needed to advance to Thursday’s match play portion among leading teams.
