Gov. Andy Beshear has initiated the final phase of the Mountain Parkway Expansion, marking a significant milestone in Kentucky’s infrastructure development. The project involves constructing a 13-mile four-lane highway connecting Salyersville in Magoffin County to Prestonsburg in Floyd County. This segment, known as Magoffin-Floyd, is the last of six segments in the 45-mile Mountain Parkway Expansion.
“This is about more than pavement – it’s about safer travel, better jobs, stronger communities and new opportunities for Eastern Kentucky,” Gov. Beshear said during the groundbreaking ceremony. He emphasized his commitment to completing this long-discussed project.
The Magoffin-Floyd segment will feature multiple bridge structures and a modern roundabout at its eastern terminus in Prestonsburg. In 2022, Gov. Beshear announced plans for this section to follow a new cross-country route instead of widening the existing KY 114 corridor, minimizing disruptions to local properties. The Federal Highway Administration approved this alignment in 2024.
A $116.3 million federal Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant was awarded to expedite construction, supported by a $150 million general fund commitment from Gov. Beshear and the Kentucky General Assembly during the 2024 legislative session.
“Breaking ground on this segment shows we are not just talking about finishing the Mountain Parkway – we are doing it,” said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray.
The Mountain Parkway Expansion aims to create a continuous four-lane corridor across Kentucky from Pikeville to Paducah, enhancing commerce and mobility within the state.
