University of Louisville men’s track and field athletes Geoffrey Kirwa and Elsingi Kipruto received Atlantic Coast Conference weekly awards for their performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational, according to an April 21 announcement from the conference.
The recognition highlights the athletes’ recent achievements, which include record-breaking times that have placed them among the top collegiate runners in their events. Such honors are considered significant within collegiate athletics as they showcase outstanding performances on both a conference and national level.
Kirwa, a sophomore, was named ACC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after completing the 3000-meter steeplechase in 8:08.10. This time not only leads all NCAA competitors for the current season but also ranks as the second-fastest mark in collegiate history. The performance was just under three seconds shy of Henry Rono’s long-standing NCAA record set in 1978. It also improved upon Kirwa’s previous ACC, program, and meet records by about six seconds. This is his third career selection for this honor and his second this season following a program-record run in the 5000 meters at Stanford earlier this month.
Freshman Kipruto earned ACC Men’s Freshman of the Week after running an NCAA-leading time of 27:29.83 in his outdoor debut for the men’s 10,000 meters. His result moves him to eleventh on the all-time collegiate list while breaking several records: nearly nine seconds faster than Adriaan Wildschutt’s former ACC record from 2022, twenty-two seconds better than the previous meet record, and forty-two seconds ahead of Louisville’s prior program best. Kipruto has now collected six such honors across cross country, indoor track, and outdoor seasons.
The Cardinals are scheduled to compete next at their home event—the Jim Freeman/Clark Wood Invitational—taking place April 23-25 at Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park.
