University of Louisville men’s track and field sophomore Geoffrey Kirwa has been named to The Bowerman Men’s Watch List, according to an April 30 announcement by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
This recognition marks Kirwa’s second career appearance on the watch list for what is considered the most prestigious award in collegiate track and field. He became the first male athlete in Louisville program history to earn a spot on the watch list in May 2025.
The Bowerman is awarded each year to the top male and female athletes in collegiate track and field, based on performances during both NCAA indoor and outdoor seasons. For this season, performances are being evaluated from November 28, 2025 through June 13, 2026.
Kirwa achieved a time of 8:08.10 in his season debut at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 16, which currently stands as the fastest steeplechase time worldwide for 2026 and ranks as the second-fastest ever recorded at the collegiate level. This performance moved him closer to breaking Henry Rono’s longstanding NCAA record of 8:05.4 set in 1978. In addition, Kirwa improved upon his previous program, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and meet records by nearly six seconds compared with his prior best of 8:13.89 from last year’s Bryan Clay Invitational.
He now holds three of the top ten individual times in NCAA history for the men’s steeplechase event, including results from both recent Bryan Clay Invitationals as well as an eighth-place finish at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 8:17.12. Alongside his steeplechase achievements, Kirwa also posted a personal best in the men’s 5000 meters this season with a time of 13:21.49 at Stanford Invitational on April 3—nine seconds faster than his own school record.
The next update for The Bowerman Men’s Watch List will be released after all conference championship meets conclude later this month; three finalists will be selected following June’s NCAA Outdoor Championships before winners are announced in December.
