A Michigan man has been sentenced in federal court for his role in a drug trafficking operation that moved methamphetamine and fentanyl from Michigan into Kentucky. Marvin Hunter, Jr., 32, of Pontiac, was given a 132-month prison term by U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, including at least 500 grams of methamphetamine and more than 40 grams of fentanyl.

Court documents state that from August 2021 through March 7, 2024, Hunter regularly transported methamphetamine and fentanyl from Michigan into Magoffin County, Kentucky. He worked with local associates who helped distribute the drugs to other dealers and users in the area. In April 2023, law enforcement searched a Magoffin County residence used as an operational base for the group. Officers found over a kilogram of methamphetamine, more than 40 grams of fentanyl, and three firearms at the scene. Investigators also used a confidential informant to make controlled purchases of both substances from Hunter.

Hunter’s co-defendants had previously received sentences for their involvement in the conspiracy. Jennifer Fletcher, 45, and Minnie Johnson, 60—both from Salyersville, Kentucky—were each sentenced to 84 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

Under federal guidelines, Hunter will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for release. After serving his prison term, he will remain under supervision by the U.S. Probation Office for five years.

Paul McCaffrey, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Jim Scott, Special Agent in Charge with the DEA Louisville Field Division; and Sheriff William “Bill” Meade of Magoffin County jointly announced the sentence.

The investigation was carried out by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew Trimble prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
