The Eastern Kentucky University softball team swept a doubleheader against Morehead State on April 15, improving their season record to 23-19.
The victories are significant as they position the Colonels for a key conference matchup, with both teams tied for first place in the Gold Division of the ASUN Conference. The outcome of this upcoming series will determine which team takes sole possession of first place heading into the ASUN Tournament.
In game one, pitcher Victoria Byrum earned her eighth win by allowing only three hits and striking out five batters. Tayteum Viganksy finished the game in relief with two hitless innings. Offensively, Kennedy Drafton went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in, a double, and two stolen bases. Jaelin Haynes contributed with two hits and two runs batted in as well. The Colonels secured an early lead and used aggressive baserunning to steal eight bases during their 6-0 win.
Game two saw Morehead State take an early three-run lead before Bayle Hunnicutt entered in relief for Eastern Kentucky and kept the Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the contest. Reese Knox led a comeback by going 2-for-2 at bat with a double and driving in two runs during a pivotal fourth inning rally that resulted in a narrow 4-3 victory.
Looking ahead, Eastern Kentucky is set to face Central Arkansas at Gertrude Hood Field this weekend. The winner will move into first place alone in their division as they prepare for postseason play.
