The Eastern Kentucky University softball team ended its season on May 5 after a loss to North Florida in the opening round of the ASUN Tournament.
The game was marked by an early lead change, as North Florida scored two runs in the first inning. The Colonels responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs, taking a brief 4-2 lead. Kennedy Drafton started EKU’s rally with a single, followed by an RBI single from Emily Mariscal and an RBI double from Makayla Mathis. Jordan Smith then delivered a two-run single to put EKU ahead.
However, North Florida regained momentum after Cook Taylor entered as relief pitcher and limited EKU’s offense for the remainder of the game. The Ospreys tied the score in the third inning and took a 5-4 lead with a home run in the fourth. They extended their advantage in the sixth inning, scoring three more runs due to a wild pitch and throwing error.
EKU managed to load the bases and score on a sacrifice fly in their half of the sixth but left two runners stranded. The Colonels were unable to close the gap further as North Florida secured an 8-5 victory.
The defeat brings Eastern Kentucky’s final record for this season to 27 wins, 25 losses, and one tie.
