Matthew See and Bradley Giblin broke school records for the Eastern Kentucky University track and field teams during competitions at the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington and the Duke Twilight in Durham, according to a May 3 announcement.
The performances highlight significant achievements for both athletes. Breaking long-standing records is considered a major milestone in collegiate athletics.
See surpassed a 47-year-old record in men’s shot put with a throw of 17.66 meters at the Jim Green Invite, eclipsing Scott DeCandia’s previous mark of 17.28 meters set in 1978. His result currently places him second in the ASUN conference and forty-third in the NCAA East Region. See is also noted as a two-time ASUN silver medalist in indoor shot put.
At the Duke Twilight, Giblin ran a school-record time of 3:37.12 in the men’s 1,500 meters, finishing second out of ninety-five competitors. This performance ranks first in ASUN and eleventh regionally. Giblin previously won the mile event at this year’s ASUN Indoor Championships.
Other notable results include Edna Chelulei winning the women’s five thousand meters at Duke with a time of fifteen minutes thirty-six point seventy seconds against forty-three competitors, while freshman Morgan Kobylinski finished fifth with her own personal best. Mario Priego Montero took third place out of twenty-seven runners with his personal-best time of thirteen minutes forty-three point eighty-one seconds.
The Colonels secured two event wins at Jim Green Invite: Taha Er Raouy won Friday’s men’s fifteen hundred meters (3:42.86), while freshman Brian Kimutai edged Purdue’s Nerius White to win Saturday’s men’s five thousand meters (14:08.34). Kristan Simmons moved into EKU’s all-time top five for both women’s discus (43.15m) and hammer throw (53.82m), setting personal bests for each event.
Lariah Wooden threw an outdoor personal-best mark of fourteen point ninety-three meters in women’s shot put on Saturday, which currently ranks her second within ASUN; she is also recognized as two-time defending champion indoors.
The team will have this weekend off before competing again at the ASUN Outdoor Championships scheduled from May 14-16.
