The Covington Board of Education announced on Apr. 13 that Cortnei Flucas has been selected as the next Superintendent of Covington Independent Public Schools following a unanimous vote.

Flucas will take over leadership as the district seeks to continue its tradition in public education and focus on student outcomes, trust, and excellence. She most recently served as Unified Student Supports Officer for Indianapolis Public Schools.

“I am deeply honored by the Board’s confidence and excited to serve the Covington community,” Flucas said. “From my earliest conversations, it was clear that Covington is a community with deep pride, real momentum, and a strong belief in what its students can achieve. My family and I are thrilled to become part of this community. I look forward to listening closely, building strong relationships, and working alongside students, families, staff, and community partners to help write the next chapter of excellence for Covington Independent Public Schools.”

Board Chair Tom Haggard said: “The unanimous vote reflects our Board’s clear and collective belief that Cortnei Flucas is the right leader for this moment in Covington. This community was clear about what it wanted in its next superintendent: someone who puts students first, listens before leading, builds trust through transparency and follow-through, and has the courage to lead meaningful change. We found that leader in Ms. Flucas.”

Flucas brings nearly twenty years of experience in educational leadership across classroom teaching roles as well as school administration positions. In her previous role with Indianapolis Public Schools—a district serving more than 30,000 students—she managed special education programs along with student services such as mental health support and family engagement initiatives.

The search process included months-long national outreach conducted with Alma Advisory Group alongside significant public input from stakeholders including teachers, staff members across various levels of the district—including those at James E. Biggs Early Childhood Education Center—and parents according to feedback collected during interviews.

James E. Biggs Early Childhood Education Center operates within education as an early childhood facility in the district; it delivers early childhood programs while offering resources like curriculum guidance and family events designed to support both children’s learning experiences and parental involvement according to its official website. The center also promotes engagement through online tools for families at its location on Scott Street in Covington.

“As we celebrate 200 years of public education in Covington, this is about far more than filling a position,” Haggard said further. “It is about setting a direction for the future… Our Board is united in believing that Cortnei Flucas has the vision, the experience, and the character to help us build the next 200 years of public education with purpose, urgency, and hope.”

Flucas will assume her new role starting July 1.
