Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine have unveiled the design for a new companion bridge as part of the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project, which spans Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The project is one of the largest transportation investments in the United States, aiming to enhance safety and economic development.
Governor Beshear described the bridge as “a game-changer for commuting families” and emphasized its importance in revolutionizing a crucial economic corridor. He highlighted that the project is being completed without tolls, despite initial skepticism about its feasibility.
The chosen design is a cable-stayed independent deck bridge, which was selected for its cost-effectiveness and ease of construction. This design will not use traditional steel trusses but will instead rely on a cabling system similar to those used in other modern bridges like Louisville’s Abraham Lincoln Bridge. Governor DeWine noted that this structure would become an iconic part of Cincinnati’s skyline, serving as a landmark gateway that enhances both functionality and aesthetics.
The design team, led by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), evaluated various concepts based on visual appeal, integration with existing structures, and potential as a regional landmark. Cost, constructability, and schedule were key factors in selecting this particular bridge type.
On completion, northbound drivers will use the top level of the new bridge, offering unobstructed views of Cincinnati. ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn remarked that this development represents “more than just a bridge,” highlighting its role in unlocking economic opportunities and supporting regional growth.
KYTC Secretary Jim Gray added that with the design now selected, expert teams are working towards construction. The broader Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project includes enhancements to the existing bridge to accommodate local traffic, redesigned ramps, new pedestrian paths, and urban aesthetic improvements.
The Federal Highway Administration has concurred with the selected bridge type. The project aims to address severe traffic bottlenecks while fostering regional economic growth. The existing Brent Spence Bridge will be reconfigured to improve safety and manage local traffic between Covington and Cincinnati.
