Bellarmine University softball marked its senior day on April 25 by splitting a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky at Knights Field. The Knights won the first game 4-3 and narrowly lost the second game 5-4.
The event recognized seniors Madison Davis, Addison Kerr, Jacklyn Zuege, and Elli Jensen for their contributions to the team. The day was significant as it celebrated the players’ final home weekend and provided an opportunity for fans to honor their achievements.
In the opening game, freshman Tia Ice hit a solo home run in the second inning to tie the score after Eastern Kentucky took an early lead. Bellarmine continued to rally with key hits from sophomore Lauren Guthrie and freshman Lily Jones, tying the game again before junior Nicole Waters delivered a go-ahead solo home run in the sixth inning. Sophomore pitcher Lele Bennett secured her seventh win of the season by pitching a complete game, allowing three runs—two earned—on eight hits and six walks while striking out two batters.
The second matchup saw Bellarmine respond quickly after falling behind in the first inning. Runs were scored on a sacrifice fly from Ice and an RBI single from Waters. Despite taking another lead in the third when Jones scored on a wild pitch, Eastern Kentucky answered back with four runs over two innings to reclaim control of the contest. Bellarmine managed one more run but could not complete a comeback.
Several Knights had standout performances throughout both games: Ice and Waters each recorded multiple hits in both contests, while Guthrie also tallied two hits in game two.
Looking ahead, Bellarmine will face Eastern Kentucky once more for their final home game of the season on Sunday, April 26 at Knights Field.
