The Bellarmine University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against North Alabama on May 1 at Hilda B. Anderson Stadium in Florence, Alabama.
These losses come as the Knights approach the end of their regular season, making each game important for momentum and standings. The results highlight challenges faced by Bellarmine (12-37, 5-18) as they prepare for their final match before postseason play.
In the first game, Bellarmine kept the score close through four innings before North Alabama scored seven runs in the fifth inning, ending the contest with a two-run walk-off home run that brought the score to 9-0 and triggered the mercy rule. Freshmen Jayla Manning and Tia Ice recorded one hit each for Bellarmine.
The second game remained scoreless through four innings as both teams’ pitchers performed well. North Alabama broke through in the fifth inning with four runs on five hits, securing a 4-0 victory. Sophomore Makenzie Cowburn pitched a complete six-inning game for Bellarmine, allowing four runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out three batters. Offensively, Tia Ice, sophomore Lauren Guthrie, and junior Brooke Shewmaker each had one hit for the Knights.
Bellarmine is scheduled to play its final regular season game on Sunday, May 2 at North Alabama.
