Independence, Kentucky – Barbara Sekula, affectionately known as “Mammy,” peacefully passed away on July 27, 2025, at the age of 85 after bravely facing terminal bladder cancer. Surrounded by her loved ones, she embarked on her final journey with strength, surrounded by love, mirroring the resilience she exhibited throughout her life.

Barbara held many titles in her lifetime, but the one closest to her heart was “Mammy” to her beloved Carter. Their bond was extraordinary, filled with special moments and cherished memories. What began as caring for him grew into a profound joy that illuminated her life.

A devoted Mammy, she poured her heart into Carter, affectionately calling him “her boy.” Their time together was a blend of routine treasures and unforgettable magic — walking around the neighborhood, engaging in board games, Uno matches, and checkers. Even in their playful competitions, Mammy’s love for Carter was unwavering.

Barbara’s practicality and heart shone through her joyful moments and loving interactions. Though she was not fond of cooking, she cherished home-cooked meals from her daughter, Melissa, savoring every bite to minimize waste. Her warmth, practicality, and loving bond with her family defined her essence.

Barbara’s bold spirit and vibrant charm endeared her to all who knew her. Her witty humor and loving nature brightened every room she entered, leaving an indelible mark. Unforgettable, her presence resonated with genuine humor and honesty, creating lasting memories for those who were fortunate to know her.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Melissa (Mark) Fleckinger, her son, John Kreutzjans, her granddaughters, Amanda Fleckinger and Sara (Nate) Fletcher, and her great-grandchildren, Carter Fleckinger and Raya Fletcher. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Stark, Jr., her niece, Bridgette (Tony) Spaeth, and her great-nephew and great-niece, Brandon and Paige Spaeth. She is reunited in heaven with her parents, Robert Sr. and Ruth Stark, and her cherished grandson, Brian Fleckinger.

A celebration of Barbara’s life will take place on August 4, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northern Kentucky. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a service. In honor of Barbara’s vibrant spirit, the family kindly requests that attendees wear bright colors.
