Republican Daniel Cameron, a candidate for Kentucky governor, expressed his disappointment on Twitter when a photo was originally taken in 2020 at an LGBTQ event resurfaced showing current Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear alongside an activist group known for their LGBTQ stances, Fox News reported.

“The fact that @AndyBeshearKY would host an anti-Christian hate group that makes fun of people of faith is disqualifying. This November, he’s going to have plenty of free time to hang out with those people, but it won’t be in the state capitol,” Cameron said in a tweet on June 6.

The photo of Beshear and the group recently resurfaced amidst recent controversy surrounding the Los Angeles Dodgers decision to bestow the ‘Community Hero Award” upon the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Fox News reported. Following the announcement, widespread dissatisfaction emerged among fans across the country, leading to the Dodgers reversing their decision due to the threat of a fan boycott, according to Fox News.

“Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a blatantly hateful group mocking religion,” Courtney Alexander, press secretary for Republican Governors Association, said, according to Fox News. “As Christians across the country are offended and appalled by the obscenity and offensive behavior of this group, this is just another reminder of how out of touch Andy Beshear is with Kentuckians.”

During the initial controversy surrounding the photo, Beshear responded by stating that he would take the photo again, emphasizing the importance of every individual in Kentucky. Alex Floyd, Beshear’s campaign spokesperson, said that the utilization of the photo against Beshear is an attempt to foster division within the state of Kentucky, as reported by Fox News.

“The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an anti-Catholic group that impersonates & make fun of nuns, are too controversial to be included in the LA Dodgers Pride Night,” Flyover Country Podcast Panelist Sean Southard said in a tweet. “You know who they aren’t too controversial for? Andy Beshear. Too radical for California, but not for Andy."

The group, known as Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, claims to be a collective of queer and trans nuns that were established on Easter Sunday in 1979, as stated on their website. The group is recognized for their flamboyant outfits and their annual Easter celebration in San Francisco, which includes activities such as contests for “Foxy Mary” and “Hunky Jesus,” as well as featuring drag performers, according to The Bay Area Reporter.
